On the Hunt

11.1.12

I thought it be fun from time to time to take you on the hunt with me for my latest obsession. This time around it’s for our latest project, our Master Bedroom we’re redesigning. So far we’ve changed out the side tables and lightened up the bedding, added some vintage chairs that are waiting to be reupholstered, and gave the whole thing a nice fresh coat of neutral paint.

I recently came across a the most fantastic artist by the name of Laura Trevey while browsing CasaSugar. A bright, cute, blue crab caught my attention.

At $18.00 for the print I thought it was such a cute little fun print and clicked on over to check it out and see if there were any other fun surprises in the shop. Oh boy, was I blown away by what I found.

She’ll even create you a custom watercolor of your home. Such a great gift idea!

The beautiful thing about Laura’s shop is anyone can take a piece of her art home. She caters to all price points by offering anything from prints to giclee to original art. And not only is Laura a great artist she has the most inspiring Bright Bold & Beautiful blog.  I can’t get enough of it.  Her beautiful art studio was featured on House of Turquoise. I’m in love.

Weekend Garden Shopping

0

17.5.11

We were hard at work adding some interest to our long gray privacy fence around the lake this weekend. We started the shoveling, wheelbarrow, and dumping gray privacy fence fixing up adventure (where say that 3 times fast)  here if you want to take a look at it in all it’s former ugliness.

Short of tearing down the 100+ ft fencing and starting over with some new pretty fencing (we’re ambitious but not weekend psychotic). We planned to create some interest and break up the long expanse of wood with some serious greenery. We’re talking shrubs, perennials all sorts of flowering goodness kind of things.

We had a few ideas going into this project of what we wanted to put there. We planned to add a couple taller shrubs to flank the gate into our yard, visually defining an entrance into our secret garden beyond. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve walked down the road, looked for the gate in the wrong spot almost walked into the fence panel…awwwwkkkwwwarrrd! It’s one of those oh geez I hope nobody saw that type moments where you brush yourself off and act like nothing happened. Hopefully flanking the gate with some shrubs with define the space enough to thwart even my clumsiness. Back to the plants, we also plan to reuse some Tiger Lilies and Hostas we had in another part of the yard as well as purchase some ornamental grasses and some flowers for color.

So it was about time we made our way to our good old garden lot to take a look and see what we could find. We ended up going home with a truckload of stuff thanks in no small part to my parents the garden lovers, but not before drooling over all the the gorgeous options available.

Plants as far as the eye can see. I wanted to take them all home.

These rhododendrons looked fantastic in the mass grouping. They were in full bloom purple glory. I can never get enough. I love spring bloomers, the only disappointment I ever feel from them is how short lived spring blooming flowers are. I just wish they bloomed year round. Now that would be something.

Hydrangeas are one of my personal favorites. Their classic beauty is undeniable. I always envision and English country garden when I think of their country cottage elegance. Ranging in color from blue to purple to pink (depending upon the acidity level of the soil they are planted in) these are a must have in my yard. I also love a dried arrangement of Hydrangeas in the house through the winter months to remind you of their summer glory.

The large leaves of the Caladium are such a beautiful way to add summer color and texture to the garden. I especially like to use Caladium as part of a potted plant arrangement.

I have always, always, ALWAYS wanted large potted palm trees in the yard for summer. Nothing says resort living  like having potted palms shading you as you sit by the pool drinking fruity cocktails under their shade.

Weeping Birch tress are just lovely. I have a particular fondness for the them because we used to have one that sat outside our kitchen window in the house I grew up in. I have such lovely childhood memories of that tree and that house :-) . I think I’ll have to get me one of those someday soon.

And last but not least the Gerber Daisy. These flowers always make me smile. These will be going in some pots at my house some day soon.

So there’s some of our the finds from these weekends plant shopping extravaganza. We brought home a whole truckload of beauties and we’ll be planting away. We’ll post some picks later this week of our Outdoor spruce up projects. Until then happy gardening!

Bedroom Update, a Touch Yellow and Gray

2

06.5.11

We’ve begun to plan a bedroom update around here. It’s not that we hate our bedroom the way it is now, we’ve just haven’t gotten around to doing much with it…yet. It has tended to be a series of hand-me downs and leftovers from the rest of the house that didn’t quite fit anywhere else. Right now the walls are painted a muted green and while the green might feel nice in another room it makes this room feel a bit on the dark side. So we’re going for a cheerful vibe this time around. What could be more cheerful than yellow? We’re loving a yellow and gray color scheme to bring some light to our bedroom. Here’s what we’re thinking we’ll do to update to our current bland bedroom.

  1. Our inspiration colors just happen to come from the Triana Plate collection from Crate & Barrel.  I love the soft yellow, green and gray colors. They strike me as just the right touch of cheery and colorful without being too in your face bright. I think it’s a great color combo jumping off point. Maybe we’ll DIY some artwork to mimic the plate design and colors or purchase the plates and mount them in a cool shadow box for some custom art work. We shall see when the time comes.
  2. The bedroom should be all about fabric and I LOVE this zebra print fabric from Waverly at Joann. The muted colors are great and I think it will add some whimsy to the space.  I’m thinking we should use it for a chair or bench or possibly a bed skirt.
  3. The pattern and color on this Pkaufmann Kamala Kilim Fog fabric from Joann’s is perfect for our headboard. It’s just the right amount of pattern and texture and will go easily with another color scheme should we ever decide to change out the the yellow accent color that will be sprinkled around the room. My plan is to upholstered scroll top headboard with some nail-head trim.
  4. Simple gray linen fabric will be breezy and casual for some custom sewn curtains, might even add some chunky grommets to the top and nice oil rubbed bronze curtain rods.
  5. Now that I have the neutral base I like this yellow geometric fabric from Dwell Studio at fabric.com. I plan to add a large yellow band of this fabric onto our linen drapes for a custom look.
  6. Next up, the pillow fabric this is where you can get really creative with patterns and color and change it out easily whenever the mood strokes or for the changing seasons. Here I’ve chosen Dover Linen, Tiffany Blue and Drake Maizefrom tonicliving.com to round out our colors in easy to change out pillow covers.
  7. For the paint color right now we’re thinking Glass of Milk from Martha Stewart for a calming color on the walls.
  8. Our boring builder closet doors will get a much needed face lift with the 3 M’s mirror, molding and Mastic, making the room feel bigger and bouncing some light and sparkle around the room.
  9. I really like this Art and we can carry the yellow and gray color scheme around the room and onto the walls with some well placed art.
  10. Finally I’m like certain aspects of this room, like the yellow side tables and black accents. We might  include this yellow color in a piece of furniture and maybe paint out our dresser in a dove gray to compliment the overall color scheme.

So there you have it the inspiration for our touch yellow and gray master bedroom makeover.
